June 7 Walking from hell to heaven
Our walk began on Wednesday, June 7, with stepping back onto the trecherous Highway 154, which was now leading us up to San Marcos Passthe stretch everyone was most worried about.
David Taylor (right), a local, Jun and myself (Benjamin) drove this stretch of the route the day before and found a couple of side roads that minimized our time on the main stretch of death-road. David is now joining us for the rest of the walk. His daughter-in-law and grandson met us for our morning break with sodas and fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. Awesome.
All worked out well. The view coming down from the mountains and into Santa Barbara was really incredible. California is a great place to be walking.
When we got back to Casa de Maria we were pleasently surprised with the transformation that had taken place with our housing. As if it wasnąt incredible enough, some local folks had taken the initiative to decorate it with all kinds of Buddhist items.
They even gave us an altar in our living room, which was just wonderful.
We were glad to meet Don George, director of Casa de Maria, who was the key to our wonderful housing.
Rebecca (center left) and her family had spent most of the day and even part of the previous day at the dorm preparing an authentic Mexican dinner for us. It was delicious. Thank you, thank you.
To complete the meal, Rebecca and family served a Free Tibet Tiramisu cake. |
