May 27 Goodbye to old friends, hello to new ones Seven members of our group headed off to San Diego on the morning of Saturday, May 27. After about 10 pile on hug sessions they piled into two cars with all of there gear and started their trip down state. The rest of us packed our gear because we were moving down to Pismo Beach that evening. Our San Diego folks did stop by our starting point before leaving so that we could all say morning prayers and the Tibetan National Anthem together one last time before meeting in Santa Monica on June 20.
Walking Saturday was incredible because about 10 people from San Luis Obispo and some Tibetans from the East Bay joined us. On top of driving four hours, our Tibetan friends brought a momo lunch, which was well received to say the least.
After lunch we walked through Arroyo Grande where their biggest festival of the year, the Strawberry Festival, was taking place. There were thousands of people there and they got an eyeful of Tibetan flags and signs, not to mention a bunch of walk brochures. They were extremely receptive to our cause, as the festival is almost more of a hippie gig than a happy small town deal. Once we finished walking we drove into Pismo Beach to our housing at the Pismo Beach Presbyterian Church. It was a beautiful little yellow building a block from the beach. Many of us quickly decided to take a trip to the sea side.
Amazingly Tibetans can dive right into the extremely cold Pacific waterseven our eldest member Pa-Tenzin-La took a swim. That evening some of the Cal Poly students brought food for dinner. The main fair was offered by Joemil Santos who is Philapeno and cooked some tradition dishes. It was excellent to say the least.
