next report

Friday, June 16 was the anniversary of the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death. They are all said to have occurred on this full moon. Before moving to a new home, the walkers tried to repay Thupten Dhargye Ling for their hospitality by helping stuff copies of Geshe-la's book, Mirror of Wisdom, with little donation envelopes. The monastery will be distributing the books free to those who attend the teachings here by the Dalai Lama. The walkers later returned to Thupten Dhargye Ling for a puja in commemoration of the holiday, in which a "tsog" offering of cookies, candy, and fruit was made.

The next day the group walked from Park Harbor to Redondo Beach, continuing along the Pacific Coast Highway. Joining us were some local walkers -- such as Pema, Tashi, Lamu, Laura, and Annaliese -- and a couple of participants from further away -- Phillip Wu of the Formosan Association for Human Rights, and Scott, a self-proclaimed wandering yogi with a nice drum. We also had a local man carrying a loud horn and another local who claims to be channeling the Panchen Lama. A program was held in the evening in Pasedena at the Church of Truth, which was unfortunately a two hour drive in rush hour. This program was hosted by the Los Angeles Friends of Tibet, and was quite successful as usual.

Sunday was the final day of walking together as the South Group! On Monday the two groups moved in together, in order to finally converge on the path of the walk the next day. Sunday involved walking through beautiful Redondo Beach, arriving at the end of a long, hot twelve miles to spend the evening relaxing at Lamu-la's house. The vegetarian members of the group went to "India Town" for a delicious dinner. The excitement of Monday will be left to the next report, when the two walks officially become one!
