June 24, 2000 President Jiang
Zemin Dear President Jiang Zemin, For more two months, a large number of people have participated in a "March for Tibetıs Independence." Now, our current walk has ended. Since 1949, more than a million Tibetans have died as a result of your governmentıs policies in Tibet. Countless Tibetans remain imprisoned for their peaceful religious and political beliefs, including the worldıs youngest political prisoner, Gendhun Choekyi Nyima, The Panchen Lama. Even in the midst of these horrendous atrocities, your government has refused to negotiate with His Holiness The Dalai Lama or His representatives. Now, there is an ever growing frustration in the Tibetan community and the Tibet support group movement. The time has come for China to peacefully resolve the Tibet situation and to demonstrate to the world that it is truly committed to the principles of the United Nations and the desires of the citizens of the planet to respect and support the rights of self-determination for all people. Therefore, we demand that you and your government take the following action immediately: Negotiate
with no preconditions with the Tibetan Government In-Exile The suffering in Tibet must be brought to an end now as should the suffering in Southern Mongolia, Eastern Turkistan, and Manchuria. Each of these countries are illegally occupied. Each deserves to be an independent nation as does Taiwan. On behalf of the 200 international organizations that have co-sponsored this walk, please act on our demands immediately. We await your response to our request. Respectfully, Lawrence Gerstein Nawang Phuntsok Tsewang Khangsar
