Day One: April 10, 2004

From: Mile 00, Chinese Embassy, Washington D.C.

To: Mile 37, Frederick, Maryland

Total Distance: 37 miles

Topography: Relatively flat with occasional hills. First half of ride was congested with high traffic as they made their way through the greater Washington area.

Weather: Bright, sunny, tepid afternoon.

Major Landmarks: Demonstration at Chinese Embassy in DC.

The Ride:
Start:
12:30 pm (demonstration from 10am-Noon)

End: 6pm Total: 6.5 hours

Average time: 6 mph, (slowed down mainly due to traffic)

Riders: 14, with guest appearances by Thupten and Kunga Norbu (Jigmešs brothers)

Casualties: No major injuries. Mainly fatigue and being new to the riding experience.

Standouts:
Tashi Dorjee: Was able to lead as well as hang back to ensure safety for his fellow riders. Quite easily able to accelerate when necessary.

Kunga Norbu: Once he got on a bike he could not be stopped!

Rating: Emotional and inspiring, yet clearly evident that this would prove to be a grueling ride!!!!

Host Family: Karma Zurkhang, President of the Capitol Area Tibetan Community

Meal: Tibetan Community Pot Luck at Karmašs House (Standing Room Only)

Wake Up Time: 6am/60+ mile ride to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
