The objective of the March for Tibet's Independence is to educate as many people as possible about Tibet, and what is happening there, and what we all can do to help. This aspect of the journey was well thought out and many programs were scheduled before the march began, but it has been the unexpected meetings, the last minute programs and the people who have given us a place to eat and sleep that have added something special to the fabric of the walk.
The walkers have talked to elementary and high school students, church congregations and peace groups. The walkers have been fed by Buddhists, Quakers, and Native Americans, and housed by Unitarians, Presbyterians and, most recently, African Methodist Episcopalians.
While spending two nights in the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) in Scranton, Pennsylvania the walkers were paid a visit by members of the Nation of Islam. Minister Victor Muhammad and the other members wished the Tibetans a safe journey and the best of luck in their liberation struggle.
At the invitation of Reverend 'Al' Allen, the walkers joined the congregation of Bethel AME for Sunday morning services, and joined in clapping and singing "This Little Light of Mine" and other gospel hymns lead by an outstanding young adult choir.
From the pulpit Reverend Al introduced the walkers. "The people you see on the first two pews practice Buddhism. Some of them are from Tibet, and they are marching to demostrate against China's rule. They have walked from Toronto to here&emdash;400 miles. They have approximately 200 more miles to walk. We are not marching with you physically. But in our hearts we are praying for Tibet's independence."
Amongst a shower of 'Amen' and 'Praise God' outcries from the audience Norbu took the pulpit and thanked the church for their prayers and hospitallity.
