(<- Previous Report) April 4th (Next Report ->) 'Nuff said... THUBTEN JIGME NORBU AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER AND NAZARETH COLLEGE Thubten Jigme Norbu has been making some very strong speeches at various presentations along the way. What follows is a compilation of two talks given at The University of Rochester and Nazareth College. Good evening everybody. It's been such a wonderful lovely day. We all enjoyed it very much today while we walked. The reason why we walk is because in 1949 the Chinese communist, a ruthless government, took Tibet saying it is a part of China. But Tibet has never been a part of China. At one time, centuries ago, Tibet and China were ruled equally under the Mongols and now China says that because both were ruled by Mongols that Tibet is part of China. Now, just sit down and think about it--is this true or not? If you believe this is true then I think Canada and the United States must still belong to the British. There is no logic to this kind of thinking. Before 1949 Tibet was just like any other independent country. Tibet had its own government with the Dalai Lama as the head of that government. Tibet had its own currency, and its own postal service, but the Chinese didn't respect any of this, and the reason why Tibetans oppose Chinese rule is because we aren't Chinese. We are completely different people. Our mentality, our physical appearance, our habits, our culture, our beliefs are completely different. You talk to Chinese and you ask, "Who is Padmasambhava?" Chinese don't know who that is. Chinese come to Tibet and talk about Confucius and Tibetans are confused. We are completely different. So you can see that we Tibetans are not Chinese at all. Over one million people have perished since the Chinese invasion. 6 million Tibetans in Tibet. That means 17% of our population has been put to death because of Chinese invasion. I think of the people in Tibet. They suffer so much. Anytime, day or night, the Chinese soldiers pull people from their homes and put them in the jails, and in the jails people are tortured. Without a trial or anything people are executed. I think it's important to tell the world community what is happening in Tibet. The Tibetans really need help. Now so many Chinese immigrate into Tibet that in Lhasa city for one Tibetan there are six Chinese. Tibetans, in their own country, they are a minority. I think if this goes on for another few years, no Tibetans left. The Chinese government must know that no Tibetan accepts that Tibet is part of China. This is why we walk. Tibet belongs to this world. If there is suffering in Tibet, and no human rights in Tibet, it affects the whole world, and it is everyone's responsibility. Killing human beings is not right. I have had this walk in mind for some time. Tell the world what is happening in Tibet. Twenty years back, a colleague of mine at Indiana University, a Mongolian professor, every morning we had a coffee break and we talk about what we are going to do about our countries. Mongolia influenced by Russian communist and Tibet occupied by Chinese communist. We must do something about this. And we thought that on day we would walk from Indianapolis to the United Nations. Then the Soviet Union fell and he went back to his country and I was left by myself. So, 1995, my Hoosier friends helped me to walk 70 miles in 10 days from Bloomington to Indianapolis for Tibet's Independence. Then last year we walked from Washington DC in front of the Chinese Embassy to the United Nations and it took 45 days. This year, my friends all with me, we started from Toronto, Canada and we will walk to the United Nations. Our walk will end June 14th. This walk is really wonderful, so far I have really enjoyed it. The weather a little bit cold, but everybody helps me and brings me hot tea. The other day we were walking and one lady brought us hot brownies. That was nice. So kind. She just drove by and saw us and ran home and made the brownies and then ran back out to find us. The pan was still warm. Always people very nice and very kind to us. Sometimes people drive by and give us the 'thumbs-up,' and sometimes they stop and say, "All right. Keep on going!" I really enjoy that. So you all must help us. Write letters to your government officials and the Chinese government and let them know that Tibet belongs to the Tibetans, and that Tibet must be independent (<- Previous Report) (Next Report ->) PO Box 194 Fishers, Indiana 46038-0194 United States e-mail: rangzen@aol.com Home | Why Independence? | Why is Tibet Important? | What Can I Do? | Events Related Sites | Important Addresses | Merchandise | E-Mail | Asian Map |
