At Lewis and Clark University the walkers set up an information table in the Student Union and gave a presentation in the afternoon. Outside the Union Michelle and Eric waved the Tibetan flag and shouted to anyone in earshot, "This is the flag of Tibet! It is illegal to fly this flag in Tibet! If I were in Tibet right now doing this I would be arrested!"
Inside the Union Lhakpa, Julie, Aaron, Jade and myself handed out Panchen Lama postcards and information about Tibet. The Panchen Lama petition was collected three pages of signatures by students disgusted by the fact the PRC would detain an 8 year old boy. We also handed out Students for a Free Tibet information in hopes of starting a chapter on this campus.
Through the help of Lhakpa's translation, Ani Wangmo spoke at the presentation filled with students we had met earlier in the day. "In Tibet my life was difficult under the PRC. I escaped to India to get more freedom of religion. In Tibet there is no freedom of religion, and there are many people in prison." In tears Ani la said, "Tibetan people in prison are looking forward to support for Tibet from American and other countries in the West. They always pray for support."
Altanbat told the students about the conditions in Inner Mongolia under PRC rule. "Now, most Americans and Western people don't even know about the dreadful conditions the people of Inner Mongolia live in. Many kinds of Chinese torture. Can't even count the different kinds of beating and burning. Girls are forced to have sex with their fathers and brothers in public-this is a very difficult fact, and I know this same thing is happening to our Tibetan and Eastern Turkistani brothers and sisters." |
