1998 March for Tibet's Independence

Walking in Taiwan

Peaceful conclusion to a successful Taiwan visit

The members of the Patriotic Association, the radical right-wing group who demonstrated this morning, and promised to make an appearance at tonight's function, must have been thwarted by the rain or found better things to do than exercise their democratic rights to free speech, for all was quite and peaceful throughout this evening's commemorative rally.

In the presence of a fully 'kata'd' audience the delegates enjoyed the entertainment of some traditional Taiwanese music, gave their final speeches and reaffirmed the wish to continue working together against the common nemesis, the People's Republic of China.

Robert Dhondrup strongly concluded the talk of the past two weeks and drew a round of applause in the middle of his speech geared towards the youth of Tibet and Taiwan. "We cannot rest until the situation that we talk of fully disappears. Young Tibetans cooperatively working for freedom and independence with young Taiwanese can make all the difference in the world. A world that needs to be challenged by our arguments. This means that young Tibetans and Taiwanese must stand clearly for the freedom of their nations. This means independence. Independence now. Independence forever! Independence is the only road for our survival. Anything less than independence simply means death."
