The real figures about China which the media seemed to forget. Exports accounted for $51.9 billion and imports for $11.6 in 1996, and the figures for 1997 will make this gap much wider (possibly as high as 15+% higher this year as it is already $38-39 bil. by Aug. this year and growing to $6-7 bil. per month.)

Additionally, the GDP of $830 billion does includes 1% of it coming from prison labor ($8.3 billion). Considering that most of this is US exports goods, upto 5-10% of the goods reaching the US could actually be forced labor. By the way, the right to strike is illegal in the PRC (so much for the workers paradise).

Ane yes, over 50% of the people in the PRC actually make less than the $674/per annum. They make less than a dollar a day, as the bulk of the new wealth is concentrated in a few areas. And with Hong Kong in the picture, major problems in the distribution of wealth will grow as prices and inflation will have to respond to the infusion of Hong Kong dollars into the PRC economy.

So the picture is not all rosey like the US business community wants us to beleive. But in their interests of creating cheap labor, the PRC will become a haven for them - a strong dictatorial anti-labor government and a massive divide in wealth. This is why China is not what some say it is.
