Day 6 - July 30

Palden Gyatso walked 8 miles today from the morning to the afternoon. He was quite strong and inspiring to all present. We had 2 guest walkers from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin that walked the entire day. While walking today, we were once again stopped by the local police who inquired about our behavior but then after some brief discussion allowed us to continue to walk. However, we were asked like yesterday not to carry our U.S. and Tibetan flags. For lunch we ate at a very crowded and well-respected family restaurant in Lake Geneva. To our astonishment, the daily lunch special menu stated, "Support U.S. Olympic Athletes in Beijing," and "One World One Dream." After lunch, Larry asked the manager to explain the rationale for including these phrases on the menu. He stated, "its just business. We thought with the Olympics coming we could make more money by including these phrases." Larry informed the manager about the purpose of our walk, the situation in Tibet, and China's policies. The manager seemed uninterested in this information or our walk. We walked 11.4 miles today. In the evening, we had a pitch in meal at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Elkhorn. Over 50 people attended the meal and more than 100 attended our presentation. Many of the people at these events were well informed about Tibet and China. We were surprised at the level of their knowledge concerning Tibet and China and their curiosity and support for Tibet. They asked many good questions during the presentation and shared many valuable observations. They people of Elkhorn have been especially gracious and kind to us. We will never forget them.
