Day 14 - August 7, 2008

Thirty-one individuals walked again. All but two were Tibetan and a large number were under the age of 20. The weather was quite good. We distributed many, many flyers about Tibet to local residents of Chicago. We received even more support than we had yesterday including numerous honks from city officials like the police, fire department, and bus drivers. In fact, it was quite overwhelming!

At the home of the Chicago Cubs baseball stadium, Wrigley Field, we all stopped to hand out flyers and take a group picture.

A great lunch was brought by yet another Tibetan family. We ate our lunch while sitting on the ground on a Chicago side street.

After completing our 10 miles, we drove back to Evanston to give out flyers and walk through the streets with our signs. Again, we received a lot of support.

Reporters from two different papers came to the walk today. We had interviews with Radio Free Asia as well.

In the evening, we had a great meal sponsored by our new host family and friends. After dinner, we held a candle light vigil for the Tibetans in Tibet, Tibetans who have died at the hands of China, Tibetan prisoners, the people of Southern Mongolia, Eastern Turkistan and Taiwan who desire independence, the hunger strikers in India who have been hospitalized, the Tibetans currently engaged in a hunger strike in Tibet, the SFTers who risked their lives in Beijing, and the SFTers injured by the Chinese in San Francisco. We also dedicated this vigil to all The Dalai Lamas, the current 14th Dalai Lama, The Panchen Lama, Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, and Taktser Rinpoche among others.

A small group of walkers created a peace symbol using candles and all the remaining walkers circled the candles during the vigil. We recited "The Words of Truth" composed by His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama as each person lit a candle in recognition of the individuals mentioned above.
